Gear to Start Rock Climbing

Process

Rock climbing gear for the new climber is especially important because spills taken by beginners can be as bad or worse than at expert climbing phases. The equipment must fit right and make the learning experience one that will promote continued interest in the sport. The basics include safety ropes, harness and carabiners, rock climbing shoes and a helmet.

Longevity

Gear for the beginning rock climber should be basic with potential for continued use. A light helmet, somewhat stiff approach shoes, top ropes and carabiners with a climbing harness can often be purchased used from a novice who has moved on to the next level. Other items like a small first aid kit for cuts and bruises and water bottle can complete a beginners gear.

Use

Each part of the climber's gear is important for a safe and successful ascent. The helmet obviously protects the climber's head from impact, and the top rope, harness and carabiners protect the new climber from falling. Comfort comes with picking a safety harness with padded webbing and loose-fitting clothing for all the stretching that comes with rock climbing. Approach shoes are stiffer than face climbing shoes, for instance, and are good for the beginner because they can be worn for the hike to the climbing surface. Items that are discretionary include a chalk bag if your hands sweat and a rucksack for things like extra rope and a first aid kit.
