Using a filtration system for the tap water in your home can save you money and help the environment. The U.S. consumes an estimate of 29 billion water bottles per year and it takes 17 million barrels of crude oil to produce them, according to the website National Geographic Kids. This amount of oil can provide a year's worth of oil to keep 1 million cars running. Water filters for your home are commonly connected to your faucet and you can switch from tap water to filtered water by turning a switch. Then you can refill a reusable water bottle and even keep additional ones in the refrigerator for later.
Step 1
Research water filters by looking into consumer advocate organizations such as Consumers Digest so you can choose the one that removes the most chemicals and contaminants from your drinking water supply. According to the article "Do Water Filters Work?" published by Time magazine, activated carbon filtration are the most effective in reducing chlorine and sediment from your water. And when they are made out of solid carbon blocks they can also reduce lead content. Reverse osmosis filters can remove arsenic, lead and pathogens from your water and distillation filters remove lead and pathogens by boiling the water and letting the steam re-condense into water.
Step 2
Contact the water filter company once you have made your choice and inquire about their warranty for your filtration system. Some systems have warranties that last up to five years, and they prove useful in case anything goes wrong or you want to sell your filtration system in the future.
Step 3
Install your chosen filtration system in every faucet of the house that you use for drinking water. This may include mini-bars in a playroom and most importantly in your kitchen since the water you use for making soups and cooking pasta should also be filtered. Depending on the system you have chosen, the water filtration system may be installed under your sink or it may be connected to the faucet via a hose. Some less expensive filters come in pour-through carafes but the ones that install directly on the faucet are more convenient if you tend to need a lot of filtered water, as it takes some time for the water to filter through the carafes' filtration system.
Step 4
Change your filter every time it expires or you will end up running tap water through your system with no benefits.
