Although men are often admired for their rugged good looks, a lack of proper skin care along with wind and weather will eventually take a toll on a man's skin, turning youthful good looks into leathery skin, wrinkles and premature aging. Men who adopt a skin care routine may not look rugged, but they can hold on to youthfulness, smooth, healthy skin and good looks well into their later years.
Step 1
Clean your face once or twice every day, using a skin cleanser formulated for your skin type. Men's skin often has large pores and overactive sebaceous glands that cause blackheads and oily skin. If your skin is oily, use a soap-free cleanser that won't irritate your skin. Use a moisturizing cleanser if your skin tends to be dry.
Step 2
Use an exfoliant to remove oil, grime and dead skin cells deep in the pores. Exfoliating is especially beneficial for men, as men's skin is thicker than women's skin. Exfoliants can be used on the chest, hands, feet and back, or other problem areas. Purchase a commercial exfoliant for men, or massage the skin with a loofah, pumice soap or exfoliating sponge. Limit exfoliating to once per week if you have acne, as exfoliating can irritate the skin. Apply a sunscreen after exfoliating, as exfoliated skin will be sensitive.
Step 3
Splash on a masculine-scented toner after cleansing, shaving or any time your skin feels oily, as a toner will remove oil, close your pores and refresh your skin. Choose an alcohol-free toner that won't irritate your skin.
Step 4
Apply a moisturizer after toning to keep your skin smooth and to minimize fine lines and wrinkles. Use a moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15, which will protect your skin from the damaging rays of the sun. Use a regular, non-SPF moisturizer at night. Select an oil-free moisturizer if you have oily skin. Avoid moisturizers containing mineral oils, which can clog the pores and leave a greasy film on your skin.
