Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in the rectal area. Hemorrhoids result when a person strains while having a bowel movement. Woman often experience hemorrhoids during the later stages of pregnancy. Other causes include obesity, sitting for long periods of time and intercourse. Symptoms of hemorrhoids include pain, itching, discomfort and bleeding. According to the Mayo Clinic, most adults have a case of hemorrhoids by the time they reach age 50. A variety of folk remedies are natural ways to treat hemorrhoids.
Step 1
Clean the rectal area as often as needed using witch hazel. Chill the solution in the refrigerator. Apply the cold solution to cotton wipes and cleanse the infected area. Hold in place for additional relief.
Step 2
Keep the anal area clean. Wash with warm water daily. Avoid using soap as further irritation may occur. Dry area with a clean towel or blow dry with a hair dryer, as suggested by the Mayo Clinic.
Step 3
Take warm baths throughout the day. The warm water will relieve the symptoms of discomfort and irritation associated with hemorrhoids. Add potato or corn flower for additional relief.
Step 4
Avoid passing difficult stools by lubricating the rectal area. Massage a small amount of petroleum jelly around and slightly inside the rectum prior to having a bowel movement.
Step 5
Chop an onion into a fine paste. Add a tablespoon of honey to the onion. Mix well. Apply to rectal area as needed.
Step 6
Mince plum leaves and grind until a paste forms. Add olive oil as needed if the paste is too dry. Rub onto the rectum for hemorrhoid relief.
Tips and Warnings
- Drink plenty of water to soften stools.
- Visit a medical professional if bleeding is frequent or if a part of the intestine or anal canal is protruding outside of the rectum. Keep the protruding portion moist or push back inside the rectum.
