A bow sight is used as an aiming tool for precision archery. Traditional archers used instincts to aim the bow but technology has produced fiber optic sights that can be installed on the bow. Sights are available in a variety of models, types and sizes to accommodate different shooting situations. The instructions for the sight will vary based on the intended use and individual features.

Installation

Step 1

Attach the sight to the bow according to the manufacturer's instructions. Most sights can be mounted using two screws that are included with the sight. Use the allen wrenches to securely tighten the screws and sight to the bow.

Step 2

Use the level to double-check the built-in level on the sight. Sight manufacturers will install built-in levels on the sights to help the archer keep the bow perfectly upright while shooting. Most new sights and new bows will be square and level, but double-checking the level will ensure long-term success.

Step 3

Secure and tighten the screws and adjustments on the bow and sight. Any loose screws could cause damage to the parts on the sight during the vibration and shock following a shot.

Sighting

Step 1

Move the gang adjustment screw to align the sight housing in the middle of the peep sight. As you pull the bow to full draw and look through the peep sight on the bow string, all of the pins in the sight should be in view. Adjust the sight housing up or down accordingly to the anchor point.

Step 2

Shoot at least three arrows into the target at 20 yards. Use the top pin for this close range and note the general location of the arrows as they hit the target.

Step 3

Adjust the individual sight pins according to the point of impact. Some sights require an allen wrench while others will feature dial adjustments. Always "follow the arrow" when making micro adjustments to the sight pins. For example, if the arrows are hitting left of the target, you will move the sight to the left.

Maintenance

Step 1

Keep the bow and bow sight in a cool, dry location. Storing the bow and sight properly can prevent wear, oxidation, moisture and dirt buildup.

Step 2

Use a bow case while traveling with your bow and sight. Placing the bow in vehicles and traveling can expose the parts to forces that could potentially break the pins or other pieces. Maintain the foam padding in the case to prevent dirt or dust buildup.

Step 3

Use a cloth to remove any debris from the sight. Gently rub the cloth along the sight parts to remove any dirt.

Tips and Warnings

  • Consult the sight's instruction manual or local archery pro shop before making any adjustments to the sight.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings while shooting a bow.
