If you want beautiful hair, the key is to keep your hair healthy and strong, giving it plenty of luster and shine. If you want to get healthy hair fast, there's no magic fix that will do everything for you. Lush locks are obtainable, however, if you practice healthy lifestyle habits, incorporate a hair-healthy diet into your daily routine and stay on top of your beauty game by taking certain styling precautions to protect your hair.

Step 1

Get your hair trimmed regularly to banish split, damaged ends. Have at least half an inch trimmed every four to six weeks, advises Minneapolis-based Gordon Nelson, international creative director for Regis Salons, in Shape magazine. Hacking off damaged ends will keep your hair healthy by maintaining the focus on your new, healthy hair growing from the roots.

Step 2

Nourish your hair by eating nutritiously. According to Hairstyle magazine, a balanced diet is essential for hair health. Essential fatty acids help hair stay shiny and healthy. Incorporate essential fatty acids into your diet by eating foods such as salmon, trout, tuna, sardines, flax seed oil and avocados. Hairstyle recommends eating four servings a week of essential fatty acids. Also eat plenty of protein food sources, such as yogurt, meats, poultry, soy, beans and tofu, as hair is composed of protein.

Step 3

Protect your hair when styling it by avoiding harsh chemicals and heat. Shape magazine recommends using products designed for color treated hair if your hair is colored, as coloring damages the hair cuticle, which can be repaired with color-protective products. You can also protect your hair by treating it with care when it's wet, Shape advises, as wet hair is especially delicate. Do not brush your hair when it's wet, using a wide-tooth plastic comb instead. Another damaging styling practice is heat styling, with tools such as flat irons, curling irons and blow dryers. Shape recommends using an ionic hair dryer, which causes less damage than regular dryers. Also, nourish your hair by using a deep conditioning treatment once every two weeks.

Tips and Warnings

  • In addition to eating a nutritious diet, keep your hair nourished and flushed of toxins by drinking at least eight glasses of water daily, Hairstyle.com recommends.
  • Don't expect to grow lush, perfect hair overnight, as your hair healthy lifestyle changes will take some time to take effect on your hair's appearance, so be patient.

Things You'll Need
