While no amount of preparation can truly prepare you for what having a baby will entail, you can be prepared for labor and delivery. This will include things that will make your hospital stay more convenient and things that will make coming home with your new baby go more smoothly. You should begin preparing several months in advance so that you aren't caught by surprise when the moment arrives. Taking the time to prepare your home and your self will mean an easier transition when your baby is born.

Step 1

Pack your bag. You are going to need many things while at the hospital giving birth. You will want to bring yourself some clothes to wear home and some pajamas if you don't want to wear a hospital gown the entire time you are in the hospital. Bring a nursing bra and front-opening PJs. You will probably want some socks if you plan to get up and walk around during your stay. Bring some books, magazines or playing cards to entertain you and any visitors while you move through labor. Pack a camera or camcorder so you can record this life-changing event. Snacks and juice will keep your partner energized so he can help you when needed.

Step 2

Make any medical decisions. If you are having a boy, decide whether you will circumcise him or not. Choose a pediatrician, and meet with her. Most parents choose to begin immunizations right away, but if you don't, you need to have an alternate plan in mind. You should also decide what you will do if your baby is distressed or if an emergency arises. Your pediatrician can help you with these decisions. Decide about breastfeeding and take a class or meet with a breastfeeding coach if you are nervous about it.

Step 3

Make a birth plan. Having some kind of idea regarding how you want your birth to go will help you and your doctor make decisions as they come up. However, nothing on your birth plan is guaranteed because your health and your baby's health will supersede any of your written wishes. Things to include can be whether you want your baby handed to you as soon as he is born or whether you want him cleaned up first; whether you want any medication during labor; and who you want in the room during delivery.

Step 4

Gather together the baby gear you will need right away. Set up your baby's bed so she will have a place to sleep when you get home. Install the carseat in your car and have it checked for safety. Most hospitals will not allow you to leave if you don't have a carseat for your baby. Bring her some clothes to wear home from the hospital and some blankets to keep her warm. Bring bottles and formula if you are not going to breastfeed.

Step 5

Take a childbirth education class. This will give you and your partner the opportunity to learn what to expect from labor and delivery, educate you on pain relief options and familiarize you with the hospital and its policies. You will also learn about caring for a newborn and meet other soon to be parents in your area. This is especially beneficial for first-time parents.

Step 6

Rest. This will keep you and your baby healthy and will give you the energy to get through labor and delivery as well as the sleepless nights with your newborn. This doesn't mean you shouldn't still be getting some exercise. Exercise will help you prepare for labor, but follow your doctor's recommendations so you don't overdo.

Things You'll Need

  • Luggage
  • Clothing for the hospital
  • Birth plan (if you have one)
  • Baby clothes
  • Carseat
