The term "cerebral palsy" refers to a group of conditions that affect balance, movement and posture. In general, patients with cerebral palsy have difficulty controlling the movement of their muscles.

Causes

The cause of cerebral palsy in infants is not well understood. According to the March of Dimes, several factors can affect the brain's development before birth. Factors associated with cerebrl palsy include lack of oxygen during the pregnancy or delivery, stoke, prematurity and infections.

Types

There are three main types of cerebral palsy, but a baby can have a combination of some or all of them. Infants with spastic cerebral palsy exhibit stiff muscles. Those with athetoid type have uncontrolled muscle movements. Babies with ataxic cerebral palsy have problems with balance and coordination.

Early Signs

Some signs that an infant may have cerebral palsy include difficulty with head movements or controlling her head when picked up; stiff legs; and reaching with just one hand while keeping the other one in a tight fist.
