Tandem bicycles are ideal for pairs with different riding strengths. For instance, a child and adult pair may ride a tandem bike so that the child can experience bike riding at adult speeds and for adult distances. Two adults can use a tandem bike to ride together even when one rider is significantly more experienced than the other. Riding tandem is a bit more difficult than a standard bike, but after a little practice you can enjoy a tandem riding experience.

Step 1

Designate a captain and a stoker. The captain rides in the front seat while the stoker rides in back. In general, the more experienced or more physically fit cyclist should take the captain position.

Step 2

Mount the tandem bike as you would a standard bike if you are the captain. Keep one or both feet on the ground to steady the bike for the stoker to mount.

Step 3

Mount the tandem bike if you are the stoker and place both feet on the pedals. The captain will handle steadying the bike when you come to a stop. If you attempt to steady the bike yourself, you may shift the weight of the bike in unpredictable ways, making it more difficult for the captain to hold the bike.

Step 4

Count to three slowly before you begin riding so that both riders may begin pedaling at the same time. The captain should lift his foot from the ground and begin pedaling with both feet as the stoker also begins pedaling. Cycle slowly for a few moments while you learn each other's pedaling cadence.

Step 5

Steer, shift and control the bike if you are the captain. Warn the stoker each time you intend to shift or stop---or when there is a bump in the road that the stoker may not be able to see.

Step 6

Pedal the bike if you are the stoker, but do not attempt to steer or otherwise control the bike. While your handlebars are fixed and will not affect the steering of the bicycle, any shifts in your weight from the center of the bike will make the bike more difficult for the captain to control.

Step 7

Communicate frequently with each other. Accelerate, break and stop only when warning is given in advance.

Step 8

Decelerate and stop slowly when you are ready to stop riding or take a break. The captain should put his foot on the ground first while the stoker keeps her feet on the pedals. After the captain has steadied the bike, the stoker may place both feet on the ground and dismount the tandem. Once the stoker is clear, the captain may dismount.

Tips and Warnings

  • Go slow and communicate. It is impossible to ride a tandem without cooperation. Practice matching each other's pedaling cadence until you are comfortable enough mirroring each other without verbal instruction.
