Dry and brittle hair is typically caused by thermal damage through the frequent use of hair dryers, flat irons, hot rollers and curling irons. While finding a solution for dry and brittle hair, limit the use of these styling tools. Also, protect the hair from the wind and sun since the elements can strip the hair of moisture. To improve the look and texture of the hair, you must find and use products that put moisture back into the damaged hair.

Step 1

Shampoo less. "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies" reprinted on the Mother Nature website suggests only shampooing a few times a week. Frequent shampooing can strip the hair of much needed moisture. Find shampoos labeled for "dry and damaged hair."

Step 2

Condition the hair multiple times weekly. Experiment with conditioners until you find a brand that puts moisture back into the hair without leaving behind an oily residue. Choose versions made specifically for dry and damaged hair. Condition the hair after shampooing at least two to three times per week.

Step 3

Apply a leave-in conditioner. Leave-in conditioners can be effective for treating dry and brittle hair. Spray the solution into the hair starting with the roots and working the product all the way to the ends.

Step 4

Raid your refrigerator. You can try several grocery items to correct dry and brittle hair while also exposing the mane to healthy nutrients. Possibilities include mixing together a banana and avocado and then applying the mixture to the hair. Mayonnaise is another choice. Leave the food item on the hair for at least five minutes before shampooing out.

Step 5

Visit your local salon. "The Doctors Book of Home Remedies" suggests going to a salon and asking a stylist for a steam treatment. Oils and creams are applied to the hair and then exposed to steam to lock in moisture.

Things You'll Need

  • Conditioner
  • Shampoo
  • Leave-in conditioner
