William Byers named the town Hot Sulphur Springs in 1840. By 1883, Hot Sulphur Springs was dubbed as the county seat of Grand County. The first campers arrived in 1905 when workers for the railroad camped adjacent to the river. Today primitive campsites still offer campers lodging near the river.
