Pulmicort is a brand name for the prescribed medication budesonide turbuhaler. This commonly used medication is in the corticosteroid class of medications and is used as an inhaled drug to treat asthma. Pulmicort is a preventative medication and not for use during asthma attack, as it will not effect the symptoms immediately. The Canadian Lung Association advices that inhaled corticosteroids do not have the same effects on the body as corticosteroid pills or injections. Pulmicort is inhaled and the medication enters the lungs directly where it helps to control asthma symptoms such as inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms and excess mucus production. However, like all medications, Pulmicort can cause side effects to varying degrees in some individuals.
Mouth and Throat Effects
Pulmicort is inhaled through the mouth, from where it travels directly through the bronchial passageways to the lungs tissues. However, as traces of the corticosteroid medication will be left in the mouth and throat, some side effects that effect these areas can occur. Corticosteroids decrease immune action to suppress inflammation in the tissue; in some cases, this can also increase the risk of other infections. In the mouth and throat, thrush or a yeast infection may occur. Other side effects listed by BodyandHealth.com include a hoarse or raspy voice, sore throat, dry mouth, coughs, sinus problems and cold-like symptoms. Doctors recommend rinsing the mouth and gargling with water to decrease the risks of these side effects.
General Effects
General side effects due to Pulmicort use can occur if the dosage of this medication is too high or if it is used for long durations, explains the Canadian Lung Association. These side effects include headache pain, nosebleeds, an irregular or fast heartbeat, stomach or abdominal pain, painful and frequent urination, weight gain, fatigue, weakness, skin itching, rash or hives and swelling of the hands, legs, ankles or feet. Any adverse reactions should be reported to a doctor.
Rare Effects
According to drug information from BodyandHealth.com, Pulmicort can cause rare and severe side effects in some individuals. These side effects should be reported to a doctor immediately and the medication should be discontinued until further advice from a doctor is given. Rare side effects of Pulmicort include fainting, dizziness, diarrhea, blood in the stools, high blood pressure, fat deposits in the face, neck and trunk area of the body, changes in menstrual cycle, pain or burning in the chest, blurred vision, changes in eyesight, unusual thirst and vomiting.
