Birthmarks are a result of excess skin pigmentation or blood vessel disorders. Pigmented birthmarks are the most common and usually fade as you age, while blood vessel disorder birthmarks can grow larger and become a cosmetic concern. Despite the reason for these birthmarks, catchy names such as stork bite, port wine stain and angel's kiss have become synonymous with these formations. Birthmarks can be removed when they become a concern you or someone you know.

Step 1

Consult your physician or dermatologist regarding corticosteroid medications or injections. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, corticosteroids shrink and fade birthmarks that block vital organs or vision. Risks of corticosteroid treatment include stunted growth in children, pain, infection, scarring and discoloration of the surrounding skin, states MayoClinic.com.

Step 2

Visit your dermatologist or plastic surgeon for pulsed dye laser removal. Laser surgery inhibits growth of birthmarks caused by blood vessel disorders and treats sores associated with these marks, according to MayoClinic.com. Bleeding, infection and scarring can occur after treatment, so discuss these risks with your dermatologist or plastic surgeon before undergoing this procedure.

Step 3

Apply a specially formulated camouflage makeup to your birthmarks. According to National Health Services, most birthmarks fade on their own without treatment.

Tips and Warnings

  • Doctors do not recommend removing birth marks unless your health is at risk. Removal can cause complications, making the risk outweigh the benefits. Consult your dermatologist before attempting any removal treatment.
