Adipex is a prescription weight loss medication designed to help you lose weight. Adipex does work and will cause you to lose weight. Adipex is designed to promote weight loss in conjunction with a diet and exercise routine. You can take Adipex alone and have success with weight loss, but diet and exercise changes enhance the effectiveness of your weight loss success.

What is Adipex?

Adipex is an appetite suppressant. The Federal Drug Administration (FDA) approved Adipex in 1959, making it one of the first medications for weight loss, according to Adipex.org. Adipex works by increasing activity in your brain to facilitate the release of neurotransmitters, specifically epinephrine and norepinephrine. Your body responds to this "fake" fight or flight response by releasing stored body fat for energy. This will boost your metabolism, suppress your appetite and cause feelings of heightened energy levels.

Neurotransmitters

Adipex works by stimulating the release of the neurotransmitters epinephrine and norepinephrine. These neurotransmitters are responsible for the increased heart rate, blood pressure and energy you experience while taking Adipex. Norepinephrine and epinephrine cause your brain to signal a release of stored fat from your cells to supply energy for the "flight or fight" response by the drug. Your body uses the free fatty acids for energy and this causes you to lose weight, according to Adipexpower.com.

Appetite Suppression

Adipex also stimulates your hypothalamus, which is your appetite control center. In conjunction with the increase in adrenaline effect of epinephrine and norepinephrine, your desire to eat decreases because of the feeling of satiety Adipex provides. Your hypothalamus doesn't send messages to your brain that you are hungry, according to Adipexpower.com, so you eat less while on the medication. This suppression of your appetite helps contribute to your success in losing weight.

Effectiveness

Adipex effectiveness in producing weight loss is good for short-term use. Adipex losses its effectiveness with time, so the longer you are on it, the less weight you will lose. Most of the weight you lose will be during the first few weeks on the drug. According to Daily Med, weight loss effects from anorectic drugs, or appetite suppressants like Adipex, vary from person to person, so drug companies aren't allowed to report the amount of weight loss you may experience. This is due to other factors that contribute to weight loss that are outside the mechanism of how an anorectic drug may work.

Indicated Use

Adipex is indicated for short-term, or four to eight weeks, use as part of a behavior modification regimen that includes diet and exercise. Because it simulates amphetamine behavior in the body, Adipex is highly addictive, states the Daily Med. Your doctor will suggest your starting dosage based on your weight goal and health status.
