Some new mothers may bear their Caesarean section scars proudly as a mark of parenthood, but that doesn't mean having one is fun. C-section scars can be puffy, itchy and noticeable, though they do fade over time. A number of creams can help make having a C-section scar more bearable, though there are no miracle cures; most scars just take time to heal.
Onion Extract
According to Columbia University's health department, onion extract has anti-inflammatory properties and inhibits the production of collagen, a skin fiber that gives scars their raised, rough appearance. Onion extract is the active ingredient of the anti-scar cream Mederma.
Vitamin C vs. Vitamin E
Scar-healing creams containing vitamin C may help your scar. According to the University of Maryland medical reference directory, vitamin C helps skin grow and strengthen, speeding healing. Vitamin E is often referred to as being good for skin, but the jury is still out on whether it helps scars heal; according to UM, it sometimes causes irritation and slows healing.
Silicone Sheets
Though not a cream per se, silicone sheets are also designed to make scars appear smaller and less visible. The sheets are removable and reusable; apply them to the scar and leave them on for at least 12 hours per day. Brand names include Rejuveness and SkinAway.
