The rice diet was a result of Duke University professor Walkter Kempner's search to find a way to combat diabetes, hypertension and related diseases through nutrition. Kempner discovered that people who used rice as their staple food rarely suffered from such diseases and as a result, the rice diet was born. According to Kitty Gurkin Rosati and Robert Rosati, authors of "The Rice Diet Solution," the rice diet is an effective means of weight control thanks to its lowered sodium content, which reduces hunger and cravings.
Step 1
Eat two fruits and two starches, such as rice or beans, for every meal during the first two days. This is the detox stage and may be maintained indefinitely.
Step 2
Breakfast on one serving of starch, one of non-fat dairy and one of fruit for the next seven days. A light breakfast will not stimulate the metabolism and helps to lower your daily caloric needs.
Step 3
Enjoy three servings of starch and vegetables and one serving of fruit for lunch and dinner during those same seven days. These meals provide ample calories to maintain high energy and feelings of satisfaction.
Step 4
Avoid salt and sodium. Most diets contain as many as seven grams of sodium while only half a gram is required, say the Rosatis. Salt increases feelings of hunger, so reducing this will help manage cravings.
Step 5
Remove fats from your diet. In order to see optimal results, you should only eat 5g or less of fat per day.
