Overview

Contraceptive foam is an effective method of contraception that involves the use of spermicidal foam to kill sperm. This method is effective when administered properly. Use of a condom with spermicidal foam increases the effectiveness. Although these spermicides can cause irritation to the vagina and penis, this side effect can often be avoided by finding a brand that does not irritate you or your partner.

Step 1

Purchase a contraceptive foam starter kit. This starter kit will contain an applicator, which can be used multiple times.

Step 2

Shake the container of contraceptive foam vigorously, at least 20 times. This will ensure that the foam and the spermicide are thoroughly mixed together.

Step 3

Make sure that you use enough foam. Different brands of contraceptive foam require different quantities of foam to be used to be effective, so follow the instructions on the label.

Step 4

Fill the applicator. To do this, place the applicator on top of the can and use hand pressure to hold it firmly against the canister. Then (and this depends on the brand, check the instructions) either push down or tilt it to the side.

Step 5

Apply the foam. To do this, lie on your back and place the applicator as deeply into your vagina as you can (without causing pain). Push the plunger. Remain lying down, so that the foam stays up near the cervix; standing up will cause it to become displaced.

Step 6

Have intercourse within a half hour of application of the foam, otherwise, apply more foam. Also, administer additional doses of the foam before each act of intercourse. Wait at least eight hours before douching, should you choose to do so.
