How to Tie a Rope-Climbing Harness

How to Tie a Rope-Climbing Harness

A rope climbing harness can be made in an emergency from a 6- to 10-foot
length of climbing quality rope and an extra carabiner. It isn’t as
comfortable as a standard webbing harness, which is made from what
looks like seat belt webbing, but it will do in a pinch, which is
about the only time you would need to use it.

Step 1

At the ends of a 6- to 10-foot length of climbing strength rope, make a simple double-strand granny knot tie-off. Climbers can get fancy with double figure-eight or water knots, but simple and quick is good in an emergency.

Step 2

Stretch the loop behind your butt with the upper strand at your lower back and the lower strand under your seat.

Step 3

Hold the two sides of the loop in one hand at your belt and reach down between your legs to bring the middle of the lower strand up.

Step 4

Hold all three loops (two sides and loop from between your legs) together. Snap the three loops into your carabiner.

Step 5

Put your climbing, safety rope through the carabiner or snap a tied in carabiner from a climbing rope onto your seat harness carabiner, and you are ready to go.

Tips and Warnings

  • It may take some trial and error to get the right length of rope for the harness depending on your size.
