After your baby is born, it takes several months for his vision to fully develop. According to the All About Vision website, your baby's first vision exam should take place at six months of age. During this test, your baby's physician will conduct a visual acuity test that will detect farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism and alignment. If the physician suspects that your baby has a vision problem, he will refer you to a pediatric eye specialist. Glasses may be necessary to correct any problems detected by the specialist. Unlike ordinary glasses that rest on the ears, glasses for babies have a strap that wraps around each ear.

Step 1

Place the glasses on the bridge of your baby's nose. Wrap the straps around your baby's ears to hold the glasses in place.

Step 2

Distract your baby by shaking a toy or stuffed animal in front of him. A simple distraction can shift your baby's attention away from the glasses, causing him to focus on the toy.

Step 3

Reposition the glasses over your baby's eyes if she pushes them away. Continue to do replace the glasses several times after she removes them.

Step 4

Set the glasses to the side if the trend of removing the glasses and replacing them continues past two or three times. Wait an hour or so and try to replace the glasses again.

Step 5

Repeat the process of replacing the glasses each time your baby removes them. Eventually, your baby should begin to accept the glasses and refrain from removing them.

Tips and Warnings

  • If despite your best efforts, your baby will not keep the glasses on, call your eye doctor. She will determine if the prescription requires adjusting or if a different type of glasses would be better for your baby.
  • Do not make wearing the eyeglasses into a power struggle between you and your baby. Each time your baby removes the glasses, calmly replace them. If at any time putting on and taking off the glasses becomes stressful, take a break. Wearing the eyeglasses should never be a negative experience for your child.
