Most people are aware of the major health risks of smoking. The use of tobacco increases the risk for a variety of diseases and conditions, including high blood pressure, lung cancer, heart disease and fetal problems, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. However, smoking also carries the risk of a variety of skin problems. Avoiding smoking helps lower these risks, so you can stay looking younger and more attractive.

Avoidance of Wrinkles

According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, premature wrinkling of the skin is one of the risks of smoking cigarettes and other tobacco products. The chemicals in tobacco smoke deprive the skin of nutrients and oxygen needed to produce new, healthy skin cells. People who smoke often develop wrinkles around the eyes, nose and mouth. Avoiding smoking may also help preserve the beauty of those around you--secondhand smoke can increase the risk of premature wrinkles.

Enhanced Wound Healing

Smoking can impair the healing of cuts, abrasions and other skin wounds, according to the Ohio State University Medical Center. Tobacco chemicals cause blood vessels to constrict, limiting the ability of skin tissues to repair themselves. Instead, the skin tissues produce uneven, discolored scar tissue. Staying away from cigarettes and other forms of tobacco may help the skin heal more rapidly, and may prevent the formation of scar tissue. Avoiding smoking may also help prevent the infection of healing wounds.

Avoidance of Eye Circles

Although dark circles under the eyes are sometimes caused by nasal congestion, allergies and aging, smoking can also contribute to this condition, according to MayoClinic.com. The tiny, delicate blood vessels under your eyes can rupture when they are constricted by the chemicals in tobacco smoke, lending a dark appearance. Avoiding smoking can help prevent dark circles, which helps you retain a more youthful appearance.
