For many parents, using disposable diaper wipes doesn't make a whole lot of sense when you are using cloth diapers. However, your baby might not react well to a dry cloth to clean her bottom, particularly if she has sensitive skin. A homemade cleaning solution can be used with cloth baby wipes to ensure your baby is fresh and clean after a diaper change.
Step 1
Wash your spray bottle with hot, soapy water and rinse well. A new, unused spray bottle is best. Spray bottles that previously held cleaners or personal care solutions may retain some of the original product and irritate your baby's skin.
Step 2
Put ½ tsp. baby shampoo in the spray bottle. The shampoo will act as the cleaning agent for any fecal matter or urine that is on your baby's skin.
Step 3
Add 1 tbsp. baby oil to the spray bottle. This will act as a skin conditioner and will help prevent chafing.
Step 4
Add a few drops of tea tree oil. According to MedlinePlus, tea tree oil has antimicrobial properties. Adding it to your baby wipe solution will prevent fungal or bacterial growth in the solution and may also help clear up diaper rashes caused by yeast infection.
Step 5
Fill the remainder of the bottle with water. Firmly attach the head to the bottle. Swish the solution before each use to mix the ingredients well, as they will separate and settle between uses.
Step 6
Spray directly onto your baby's diaper area or spray onto a cloth before wiping your baby clean.
Tips and Warnings
- Many parents in the Berkeley Parents Network reported excellent results with using plain water with their cloth baby wipes, and Medline Plus recommends plain water for cleaning when an infant has developed a diaper rash.
- If your child develops any redness or skin changes while using this cleaning solution, discontinue use immediately and consult your pediatrician.
