Aroma oils can be used to freshen the air in your home or office or they can be used to provide relief from illness and discomfort. Eucalpytus oil can soothe a cold, while lavender oil can promote calm and restfulness. Essential aroma oils added to a massage oil carrier such as olive or almond oil can help relieve muscle aches and stress. Most aroma oil diffusers use tea light candles to gently heat drops of oil in a vessel. When warmed, the oil releases its scent into the air.

Step 1

Mix a few drops of aroma oil with vegetable oil. These "carrier oils" include sesame, sunflower and avocado oil. They are full of essential fatty acids that are good for your skin, making them excellent for massage. Carrier oils, unlike aroma oils, can go rancid, so mix a small batch at a time.

Step 2

Fill the dish of an aroma lamp with warm water, set the lamp on a heat-proof surface and light a candle beneath the dish. When the water is warm, add a few drops of essential aroma oil. Do not use oils that have already been mixed with a carrier oil.

Step 3

Add ¼ tsp. of tea tree oil to a pot of boiling water to steam pores and open sinuses. The natural antiseptic properties of tea tree are also sometimes used for troubled, acne-prone skin. You can also add it to a hot bath with an equal part eucalyptus oil to soothe sore muscles after a workout.

Step 4

Mix your own cleansers for use around the house by combining essential aroma oils with white vinegar and water. Pine, cinnamon, lemon, sage and orange oils disinfect and leave bathrooms and kitchens smelling fresh.

Step 5

Burn citronella oil in a diffuser or in candle form outdoors to keep bugs away. Peppermint, lemongrass and lavender are other insect-repellent oils that combine well with citronella and they release a pleasant scent as they are vaporized.
