When people think about air pollution, they do not usually think about the inside of their homes. But according to the Environmental Protection Agency, indoor air is actually two to five times more polluted than the air outside. The cause of this indoor air pollution is often the same chemical cleaning supplies we use to clean our homes. Natural cleaning supplies can usually do the job just as well as chemical alternatives, without affecting health or the environment.
Vinegar
White vinegar is a common household item that can also work as a cleaner. Because white vinegar is mildly acidic, it works well to dissolve dirt, soap scum and mineral deposits from hard water. Vinegar is also a natural deodorizer, according to the Organized Home website. It does not retain the vinegar smell but neutralizes other odors. Mix equal parts vinegar and water to create an all-purpose cleaner for sinks, floors, countertops and glass.
Baking soda
Baking soda is another inexpensive household item that doubles as an effective cleaner. Baking soda neutralizes acid and deodorizes, according to the Charity Guide. Baking soda can be used as a scouring powder to polish stainless steel and scrub ovens. When mixed with vinegar, baking soda can also scrub toilets and open clogged drains.
Lemon Juice and Olive Oil
Lemon juice and olive oil is sometimes called the "salad dressing" alternative to furniture polish, according to Organized Home. Combine 1 cup of olive oil with 1/2 cup of lemon juice. Shake the mixture well and apply a small amount to a soft rag, such as flannel, to gently polish wood furniture.
