Irritants, dermatitis, allergies, reactions to medications, insect bites, infections, sweating and dry skin are possible causes of skin itching and rashes. Regardless of the source, gentle cleansers, cool water, natural ingredients and a dose of patience can often alleviate the discomfort. If the cause or source of itching or rash is unknown, a diagnosis will help to determine appropriate remedial treatment. The sudden appearance of an itchy rash or hives may be a sign of a medical emergency. Consult with a medical care professional if home remedies do not provide prompt relief.

Herbal Remedies

An herbal wash or poultice may help to temper the discomfort of an itchy rash until professional advice is obtained. Herbs such as chamomile, echinacea root, elder and calendula--or marigold--flowers contain anti-inflammatory, antifungal and other healing agents that calm inflammation and ease itchy skin. The Mother Nature website suggests steeping the herbs in boiling water for 15 minutes and mixing the strained liquid with a few tablespoons of baking soda for a calming skin wash. If desired, add a few tablespoons of bentonite clay to the liquid and apply as a poultice.

Self-care

According to MayoClinic.com, a bath in cool water or a moistened compress may help to soothe irritated skin. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone creams applied directly to the affected areas may provide temporary relief. A challenging but helpful course of action is to avoid scratching the skin as much as possible. A soft cloth or bandage may serve as a reminder to refrain from the natural scratching response. Because ultraviolet light therapy is occasionally prescribed to treat skin conditions, a 10-minute dose of sunlight may help to improve the skin's condition.

Kitchen Cupboard Remedies

An oatmeal bath will help to relieve symptoms of eczema and psoriasis, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. A touch of antidandruff shampoo applied to scaly rashes associated with seborrheic dermatitis may eliminate symptoms if left on for 10 minutes and rinsed with tepid water. Rashes and itching caused by contact with seasonal plants, such as poison ivy and poison oak, respond well to an apple cider vinegar wash, according to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. For maximum health benefits, choose organic, naturally fermented vinegar that contains the byproducts--or "mother"--of the fermentation process, rather than commercially prepared and filtered vinegar.
