Some models of Timex Ironman watches come equipped with a heart-rate monitor feature, allowing the device to receive and display information recorded by a transmitter module. To minimize the risk of the watch picking up a signal from another person's transmitter, the watch uses a "pairing" process to detect your transmitter's identification. Once you've paired the two components, input your information to the watch, after which the device will be ready for use.

Step 1

Press the "Mode" button, located on the lower-left edge of the watch. Continue to press the "Mode" button until you see "HRM Setup" appear on the watch's display. Press the "Heart Rate" button, located on the lower-right edge of the watch; hold the button down until you see the words "Press mode to pair watch with strap" appear on the display.

Step 2

Press the "Mode" button. Lift the transmitter's strap with both hands and place a thumb over each of the device's electrodes. Activate the transmitter by rubbing the electrodes with your thumb. Wait for the watch to beep and display the message "Pairing done" before proceeding.

Step 3

Turn the transmitter over until the electrodes are facing upward. Use a damp washcloth to apply a few drops of water to the electrodes. Lift your shirt and place the rear of the transmitter against the center of your chest, with the transmitter's logo facing upward. Wrap the strap around your body and connect the remaining end to the transmitter. Lower your shirt.

Step 4

Strap the Ironman heart rate monitor to your wrist. Use the "Mode" button to return to the "HRM Setup" mode. Press the "Start/Split" button to select your target heart rate zone; lower levels are appropriate for modest fitness or weight loss goals, while higher levels are best reserved for intensive athletic training. Press the "Mode" button again to save your settings, then return to the "HRM Setup" mode.

Step 5

Press the "Stop/Reset/Set" button, located on the upper-right edge of the watch. Use the "Mode" and "Start/Split" buttons to input your personal data, then press the "Stop/Reset/Set" button to save your settings. Press the "Mode" button to exit the "HRM Setup" mode.

Step 6

Press the "Heart Rate" button and wait for the watch to establish a connection with the transmitter. Press the "Start/Split" button and begin exercising. Examine the watch's display periodically to see your current heart rate reading.
