According to The Vanishing Tattoo, tattoos have gained in popularity over the last decade, losing their bad reputation from the past. Surveyed Americans said having a tattoo made them feel sexy and 83 percent do not regret being tattooed. A tattoo becomes a permanent piece of artwork displayed on your body.

Step 1

Consider what message you want to convey or what picture best represents you. For example, a free-spirited individual might incorporate a butterfly or wings into his design.

Step 2

Measure the area on your body you want to tattoo. Draw your design to size or draw a design that when enlarged, does not lose details. Enlarge your design on a copy machine to see how enlarging affects your details. Adjust your drawing as necessary if your design loses some details when enlarged.

Step 3

Color your tattoo design using map pencils or colored markers. Shade your drawing where necessary to create shadows and depth. Your tattoo artist can copy how you color your design and the colors you choose.

Step 4

Take your design to a professional tattoo artist who can make a copy of your design on special paper to transfer onto your body.

Things You'll Need
