Illinois is the heartland of the Midwest, with small-town activities located throughout the state and a big city experience in Chicago. Families looking to stay healthy and active during their Illinois vacation won't have any trouble staying on their feet and keeping their kids moving. No matter the time of year, Illinois has plenty to offer kids of all ages.
Chicago
For the most options for kids' activities, go to the third-largest city in America. Chicago has parks, sporting events and museums that people of all ages will enjoy. Stay active by exploring Chicago's downtown neighborhood, The Loop. Head up to the top of some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world, the Willis Tower and John Hancock building, to get bird's eye views of the city.
Suburbs
For as many activities offered to kids in Chicago, there are just as many in the suburbs. Nature lovers can romp about in the Morton Arboretum or Chicago Botanic Gardens, both located west of the city limits. Kids can learn about architecture or wildlife in the Oak Park area, by visiting either the Frank Lloyd Wright home or Brookfield Zoo.
Springfield
Located in the center of the state, Illinois' capitol is a blast from the past. Kids can have fun while learning about the 16th President of the U.S. at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. Experience the preserved home of Lincoln, and see his tomb, where you can rub the nose of a Lincoln statue for good luck.
Starved Rock
Just north of central Illinois--not even two hours from Chicago--is the most popular state park in Illinois. Starved Rock has camping and hiking, with surprisingly hilly terrain and exciting wildlife such as bald eagles. Stay on the trails to avoid accidents, but take the whole family to Starved Rock for a true experience with the beauty of nature.
Rockford
The northwest corner of the state is not as crowded with tourists, but the Rockford area offers some of the best activities for families on a budget. The Illinois Railway Museum, as well as Ronald Reagan's childhood home and Visitor Center, are both in the area. In the city of Rockford, dinosaur lovers shouldn't skip the Burpee Museum of Natural History.
