Vytorin Side Effects for Females

Vytorin is the brand name for a prescription drug that contains two active ingredients, ezetimibe and simvastatin, which help lower cholesterol levels in patients. This medication specifically lowers the levels of "bad," or LDL, cholesterol while elevating levels of "good," or HDL, cholesterol. Vytorin side effects for females are typically the same as those experienced by males; however, treatment with this medication is not recommended for women who are pregnant, intend to become pregnant or are currently breastfeeding, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Females are also advised to utilize an effective method of birth control if treatment with Vytorin is necessary.

Muscle or Joint Pain

Females taking Vytorin can develop unusual sensations of pain within their muscles or joints, a side effect called myalgia. Muscle or joint discomfort may also arise in conjunction with limb numbness or tingling. Women who experience severe muscle discomfort that is accompanied by weakness while taking Vytorin should seek care from a medical professional. These side effects can indicate a severe reaction to this medication.

Upper Respiratory Infection

Nearly 4 percent of patients treated with Vytorin during clinical trials developed an upper respiratory tract infection, according to RxList. Females who develop this type of infection while taking Vytorin can experience sore throat, sneezing or nasal congestion symptoms. Affected women may require additional evaluation from a doctor, as antibiotic medication may be necessary to resolve upper respiratory infection symptoms.

Diarrhea

After taking a dose of this medication, females can experience diarrhea. Diarrhea can also contribute to abdominal cramping, pain or discomfort in certain women. Eating a small snack before taking a dose of Vytorin can help women prevent or limit the severity of diarrhea side effects. If diarrhea symptoms occur in conjunction with nausea or stool discoloration, affected women should consult a physician.

Headache or Dizziness

Headache pain or dizziness can arise as side effects of Vytorin in females, Drugs.com reports. Uncomfortable headache symptoms were reported by nearly 6 percent of patients during clinical trials, according to the FDA. Mild to moderate headache pain can be controlled through the use of an over-the-counter analgesic medication. Women who become dizzy while taking this medication should remain seated until such sensations pass. Dizziness can increase a woman's risk of tripping or falling while attempting to walk or stand normally.

Mood or Memory Changes

Mood or memory changes, such as depression or memory loss, can occur as side effects in certain females during treatment with Vytorin. These side effects are temporary and typically subside with continued use of this medication. Women who are concerned by mood or memory changes should contact a doctor for additional care and guidance.
