Baby Orajel is one of several brand names for topical benzocaine. According to RxList.com, topical benzocaine is a local anesthetic that works by blocking nerve signals in the body. Baby Orajel is a non-prescription form of benzocaine used to ease teething pain in infants by numbing the gums. While most Orajel side effects are considered mild, there are some serious side effects associated with allergic reaction and overdose that require immediate medical attention.
Skin Irritation
The most common side effect of Orajel is skin irritation. Symptoms of skin irritation include tenderness, redness, mild stinging, burning or itching at the application site. These symptoms should resolve over time and are not considered serious. However, should they persist or become more severe, contact your pediatrician as medical intervention may be necessary.
Allergic Reaction
As with all medications, Orajel can cause an allergic reaction requiring immediate medical attention. Babies using Orajel for the first time should be closely monitored for symptoms of an allergic reaction such as wheezing, itching, chest tightness, severe cough, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. If left untreated, a severe allergic reaction can be fatal. If you suspect an allergic reaction, call your pediatrician or seek emergency medical help right away.
Overdose
Side effects associated with an overdose of Orajel can be fatal, so it is extremely important that you follow your doctor's instructions and use this medication exactly as directed. According to Drugs.com, an infant's body may absorb too much of this medication if you apply more than directed, apply over a large area or use on irritated or broken skin. Side effects of an overdose include seizures, uneven heartbeats, slowed breathing, coma and respiratory failure. An overdose of Orajel is considered a medical emergency requiring immediate medical attention.
