Because children love to play and imitate others, retailers sell potty training dolls, but you can turn any doll into a potty training doll with a cup of poured water. Make the doll come to life when your child shows signs that he is ready to potty train. According to MayoClinic.com, signs of readiness include the ability to follow basic commands, dry periods of at least two hours, predictable bowel movements, the ability to tell you when he needs to go, the ability to pull his pants up and down, and an interest in using the potty or graduating to underwear.
Step 1
Designate one of your child's favorite plastic dolls or action figures for this purpose. You can use a cloth doll, but plastic dolls are easier to dry.
Step 2
Make a cloth diaper or pair of underpants for the doll to wear or use a real plastic diaper. Preemie or newborn diapers will likely work best for a baby doll.
Step 3
Walk your child and her doll to the bathroom when it's time to potty. Have your child remove her doll's diaper and sit the doll on the potty. Help hold the doll so it doesn't fall into the toilet.
Step 4
Pour water down the doll's backside to make the doll pee into the potty.
Step 5
Pour a small cup of water down the doll's backside to make the doll pee into the potty.
Step 6
Tell your child to remove his diaper, sit on the potty and pee just like his doll did. Boys can learn to pee sitting down before learning to pee standing up.
Step 7
Congratulate your child if she is able to pee. Try again later with the doll if she was not able to pee.
Tips and Warnings
- Turn on the bathroom faucet or pour a cup of water down the sink while your child sits on the potty to help him pee. The sound of running water helps some people pee.
