The Atlantic Cod is one of most popular species to go after when fishing recreationally. It is plentiful in Canada and New England and it can be found as far south in large numbers in the ocean off New Jersey. Cod is known for having a light flavor and can be prepared by baking, broiling or frying it.

Boat Fishing

When fishing for Atlantic Cod off of a fishing boat, you should know that you will usually have the most success at depths of at least 200 feet. Use an 8-to-10 feet medium-stiff rod to get the best result. The best kind of fishing line when Atlantic Cod fishing is usually a 4-to-50-lb. test dacron line. This is strong enough to handle this active fish that will fight hard for at least five minutes before you start to win the battle.

Jig Fishing

Use a 10 to 20 oz. Norwegian style jig with a treble hook when going after the Atlantic Cod. To get the best results, tie your jig to a one-foot piece of 40 to 50 lb. test monofilament leader. Use a red, green or black teaser worm as you lure. This will entice the Atlantic Cod to start chasing your line.

Extreme Cold Weather

The Atlantic Cod can be caught all year round. While you may have a more relaxing time and enjoy yourself more in summer and early fall, you may be much more productive when it comes to bringing Atlantic Cod home in large numbers in colder weather. However, you will need a stronger line in the colder months. Use a 50-to-80 lb. test line in colder weather and rougher conditions.
