As you age, your skin loses elasticity and your hair turns gray. According to MIT Engineering, this vicious cycle is the result of dying cells. As you age, your body lacks the cells necessary to create pigment, which is what gives hair its color. The less pigment your hair cells contain, the more gray hairs you will begin to notice. Gray hair has a tendency to absorb pollutants from the environment, which may manifest as brassy or yellow streaks. The best way to get the yellow out of your gray hair is to wash it away.

Step 1

Visit your grocery store's shampoo aisle or your hair salon and purchase a bottle of blue, violet or blue-violet shampoo. Blue or violet based shampoos remove residues in the hair and neutralize yellowing.

Step 2

Rinse your hair with warm water. Squeeze a quarter-sized amount of blue-violet based shampoo into the palm of your hand.

Step 3

Massage the blue-violet shampoo into your hair and scalp. Allow the shampoo to sit on your gray hair for three to five minutes.

Step 4

Rinse the blue-violet shampoo away with a cool water rinse. Dry your hair and style as usual.

Step 5

Repeat the process once more during the week. Use your regular daily shampoo on days that you do not use the blue-violet based shampoo.

Tips and Warnings

  • If you are a smoker, try to kick the habit. Smoke from your cigarette can penetrate your hair, giving it its yellow tinge.
  • Do not use the blue-violet shampoo more than twice a week. Overuse can cause your hair to take on a violet hue. Used once or twice a week, blue-violet shampoos will remove yellow, enhancing your gray.

Things You'll Need
