If you want to keep your treadmill running smoothly, you will have to perform some light maintenance tasks. Treadmills contain many moving parts; the main ones being the belts and the rollers. If these parts become dry, friction will increase, possibly causing damage to the treadmill. It is much more economical to purchase lubricant and routinely lube your treadmill than it is to purchase a new walking belt for your machine.
Step 1
Purchase the lubricant recommended by your treadmill manufacturer. Many treadmills require specific types of lubricant. Consult your owner's manual to ensure you are using the proper lube.
Step 2
Turn the treadmill off and unplug the unit from the wall.
Step 3
Use an Allen wrench to loosen the rear adjustment bolts. These bolts are usually located at the back end of the treadmill, one on each side. Loosen the bolts until you can slide your hand under the walking belt. Count the number of times you turn each bolt and turn both bolts the same number.
Step 4
Squirt the entire tube of lubricant along the length of the walking deck. Horizon Fitness recommends using 40 to 50 ml of lubricant. Check your owner's manual for the proper amount for your model.
Step 5
Lay the walking belt down. Tighten the rear bolts the same number of turns you did to loosen them.
Step 6
Spread the lubricant over the walking deck. Plug the treadmill in and power it on. Run the belt for 3 to 5 minutes at 3 mph, then walk on the belt for 3 to 5 minutes.
