Often, when you are scheduled to undergo surgery, your doctor will restrict you to a liquid-only diet prior to the procedure. Consuming only liquids will help to clean out your digestive tract for procedures and tests that require no food in your system. Your doctor will instruct you on how many days you must remain on a liquid diet before and after surgery. It is important to follow directions closely to avoid having your surgery postponed.
What to Drink
A liquid requires you drink just about everything, but traditional beverages will likely make up a good portion of your daily intake, as you attempt to fend off hunger. Drink clear juices such as apple, cranberry and grape. Mild tea is acceptable, as long as you do not add milk or cream. Water is always a good choice, and ginger ale or club soda may be consumed, as well. Drink any of the beverages freely throughout the day.
Soups
Since solid foods are taboo, soups will probably make up the bulk of your "meals foods." Clear broth, consomme and bouillon will be your staples. Stick to soups that you can see through, to ensure you don't ingest too much bulk. Ask your doctor for clarification if you'd like to mix in any herbs or tomato paste for flavor.
Extras
Extras on a surgery liquid diet may include plain frozen pops, hard candies, flavored gelatin and honey. Try to mix the sweeter foods in sparingly throughout the day so your blood sugar doesn't fluctuate too dramatically. Ask your doctor if you are unsure of any items.
