Puffiness or swelling under the eyes is often referred to as having bags under the eyes. MayoClinic.com reports this is often simply a part of the aging process; the result of weakened muscles in the eyelids. When these muscles weaken, fat or fluids are able to accumulate in the under-eye area. While puffy eyes can also be associated with allergies, bags under the eyes are generally not a sign of a serious medical issue, and a few steps can instantly reduce puffiness and improve the appearance of your under-eye area.
Step 1
Make a cold compress by soaking a wash cloth or tea bags in cold water; or alternately, cut a cold cucumber into slices.
Step 2
Place the cold compress or cucumber slices over your eyes. Leave them there for five minutes while sitting upright to help constrict the blood vessels and reduce swelling.
Step 3
Apply a cream designed specifically for the under-eye area; many of these creams contain caffeine, which tightens the skin and reduces puffiness. Tap it gently onto the area; avoid rubbing it in, as that can cause wrinkles to form, reports the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Tips and Warnings
- For long-term avoidance of under-eye puffiness, sleep with your head slightly elevated. This helps avoid fluid from pooling in the under-eye area. Talk to your doctor about surgery for long-term treatment if eye puffiness is a recurring issue.
- See a doctor if you suspect allergies are to blame for the bags under your eyes; short-term treatments can reduce the bags but won't treat the underlying problem.
