Damaged black hair will often appear dull, feel brittle or coarse, break easily and be prone to split ends. Overuse of a hairdryer or flat iron, as well as chemical straightening and coloring, can wreak havoc on your locks, rob your strands and scalp of their natural oils and cause hair to lose its strength. To get your hair back to its optimum level of health, use products and styling tools designed to repair the damage, restore your hair's moisture and help protect it from future harm. Healthy hair will feel soft and luscious and look radiant.
Step 1
Shampoo your hair only once a week. Salon owner and celebrity hairstylist Amoy Pitters notes that this will help keep damaged black hair from further breakage, as well as rid your scalp of any buildup. Pitters recommends using a repairing shampoo that contains no soap, such as L'Oreal EverStrong Sulfate-Free Fortify System Reconstructing Shampoo. Wet your hair and massage the shampoo onto your scalp and through your hair. Rinse thoroughly.
Step 2
Condition your hair with a restorative treatment that will also protect it from heat damage. Use an oil-based product that will nourish strands, and avoid those that contain alcohol, as this can sap moisture from your hair. Hairstylist Christo suggests Ojon Restorative Hair treatment. Dry your hair with a towel, then place a small amount of the product in your hand and warm it between your palms until it thins out. Rub the oil through your hair from the roots to the ends, and do not wash it out.
Step 3
Blow-dry your hair with an ionic and ceramic hair dryer. This type of blow dryer is stronger and will dry your hair more quickly, which will help prevent heat damage from occurring. If your hair is curly, use a diffuser. This will keep your curls from frizzing, as well as dry them faster.
Tips and Warnings
- Use mild chemicals to color your hair, and be careful not to overprocess it, which can lead to more damage. Do not color and chemically straighten your hair. The overdose of chemicals will most likely cause breakage.
