Sodium sulfate, also known as sodium hydrogen sulfate, consists of the elements sodium, hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen in defined proportions. The compound is non-flammable but corrosive. Corrosion, known in Latin as corrodere, is a substance that permanently damages the surface of an object. Strong acids and strong bases are examples of corrosives. Sodium bisulfate has a variety of uses and applications including acting as a corrosive compound.
Fly control in barns
Barn stalls are home to a variety of animals, including horses and ponies, and various health concerns. Ponies are a breed of horse smaller in size. Barn stall concerns arise from the conditions ponies and other animals live in. These concerns include fly population and ammonia concentration. In 1996, the University of Pennsylvania published findings that showed sodium bisulfate, when applied to barn stalls, decreased ammonia concentration and fly population. The results shows by the study increased the quality of living conditions for ponies.
Disinfectant
Osmosis is a process where two liquids of differing concentrations, split by a thin membrane, equalize concentrations. Reverse osmosis is a filtration process that purifies water by using a thin membrane as a filter. As water passes through the thin membrane, the membrane catches and separates contaminants. In 1996, the United States Environmental Protection Agency published findings that showed sodium bisulfate could be used as a disinfectant to prevent damage of the membrane used in reverse osmosis.
Metal Finishing
The last step in metal preparation is known as finishing. This step involves the polishing of metal to give it a shiny appearance. There are a variety of ways capable of producing final metal products including mechanical and electrolytical. In 1972, a more practical finishing method was published by Safranek and Miller in Journal Plating. They described how sodium dichromate and sodium bisulfate could be used together to accelerate the finishing process. This solution could be used with either barrel finishing or vibratory finishing techniques.
