Archery has been used by mankind as an effective hunting tool as well as for competitions for thousands of years. The short bow was found as a better hunting implement than the long spear in the early days of humankind's history due to its small size and easier mobility through wooded areas. In more recent times, competition archery has risen in activity due to the lack of need to hunt for food. Making your own target at home can help you practice whether for archery competition or going out to do your own bow hunting.

Step 1

Measure 15-degree angles along the 4-inch side of two 2 x 4 boards from the top corner of one end. Mark the angle across the board until you reach the opposite side of the board using a straight edge. Use your saw to cut along the line marking the 15-degree angles. These are the front boards.

Step 2

Measure a 20-degree angle along the 4-inch side of the remaining 2 x 4 board from the top corner of one end. Mark the angle across the board until you reach the opposite side of the board using a straight edge. Cut along the line marking the angle with your saw. This is the support board.

Step 3

Align the two front boards so that they meet and form an upside down "V" with the cut sides flush with each other. Use your drill with the Phillips adapter to screw in 4-inch wood screws to secure the two boards together. Insert screws from each board facing down into the second board.

Step 4

Align the support board with the back side of the front boards so the cut angle is flush with the other boards. Use your drill with the Phillips adapter to screw in 4-inch wood screws to secure the support board to the others. Insert screws from the back side of the board, facing down into the other boards.

Step 5

Measure the distance between each front board and the support board at about 2 feet from the ground on each board. Cut two sections of 2 x 2 board the length of each distance from the support board to the front boards. Install these supports with wood screws from each front board to the support board to provide stability.

Step 6

Drill a 1-inch deep hole in the middle of each front board facing outward at 45 degrees from the top of the assembly. Cut two 4-inch lengths of 1/2 inch wooden dowel using your saw. Apply wood glue to the inside of each of the ½ inch holes. Insert the 4-inch lengths of wooden dowels into each hole. Use a rubber mallet if necessary. Let the glue stand two to five hours.
