Hair Color Facts

Natural hair color is hereditary, meaning that it is a genetic trait passed down from parents. Hair dyes can change the color of hair. New hair growth turns gray or white as people age.

Pigments

Melanin is a pigment that the body begins to produce before birth. Melanin has two types of pigments, dark and light, that are injected into hair cells that contain the protein keratin.

Color

Hair color is determined by the amounts of light and dark pigments in the hair, the amount and distribution of the pigments.

Red Hair

People with red hair have a natural resistance to local anesthetics that are applied subcutaneously, or just below the skin.

Light Color Hair

People with light color hair are at higher risk to skin cancer.

Aging

As people age, the amount of melanin injected into hair cells decreases, which reduces the amount of coloring in hair. Without fewer and fewer pigments, hair turns gray and white.

External Factors

External factors can affect hair color. These factors include pollution, chemical exposure, toxins and climate.
