What To Look For
While hiking in the snow can be done, it is easier to use snow shoes. Whether you are hiking in the snow or using snow shoes, the same type of boot is necessary. Waterproof boots are key. Choose a boot that will keep your feet warm. You want a boot that is stable and not too flexible. Steep inclines and descents will require a structured boot to give you support. A boot used for snowboarding can also be used for snowshoeing and hiking in the snow.
Common Pitfalls
Get the right size boot and wear them in before embarking on a long hike. When sizing your boot, wear a lightweight wicking sock layered under a heavier warmer sock. You may even want to wear neoprene socks. Consider what type of hiking you will be embarking upon. For hiking powdery snow, get a wide-base boot to keep you from sinking. If you are hiking steep, icy slopes, you need a boot that can support crampons.
Where To Buy
Do not order online. Go to a mountaineering or sporting good store that has a wide selection of snow boots. REI and EMS have stores in most states and you can try local stores located in towns near trails. Brands to look for are Sorel, The North Face, Koflach and Vasque.
Cost
Basic snow boots run about $60, while boots with more specific design features, such as those that can use crampons, run about $400. Sometimes you can find stores that are selling the previous season's styles at considerable discounts. Other price discounts can come at the end of the season when stores are trying to get rid of inventory.
