Anti-Aging Skin Care Systems

Wrinkles and other skin-related aging symptoms have launched an industry of anti-aging skin care systems. These products are available both over-the-counter and via prescription and can be effective, but their quality and the scope of results differ from one product to the next.

Retinol

Many anti-aging skin care systems contain retinol, a compound made from vitamin A that works as an anti-oxidant. It binds to and neutralizes free radicals, the harmful molecules that damage skin and cause signs of aging. Another compound used is tretinoin, a relative of retinol but more potent and only available as a prescription.

Hydroxy Acids

Another compound in anti-aging skin care systems is hydroxy acids. These acids can have different chemical forms and are commonly termed alpha-, beta-, and poly-hydroxy acids, though they all have similar properties. Hydroxy acids exfoliate the top layer of skin, leaving newer and younger-looking skin layers at the surface. Use of these products can make you sensitive to sunlight, so always wear sunscreen after using anti-aging skin care systems with hydroxy acids.

Other Substances

In addition to retinol and hydroxy acids, other compounds are found in anti-aging skin care systems. Coenzyme Q10 is a nutrient that promotes energy production and helps skin cells repair themselves. Copper peptides are small proteins that have copper attached to them. These help break down large chunks of collagen, that can contribute to wrinkles, into smaller bits of collagen resulting in smoother skin. Other ingredients in anti-aging skin care systems include kinetin and tea extracts that work as anti-oxidants.

Hazards

Skin care systems are considered to be cosmetics by the FDA, and as such there is less stringent testing and quality control for these than there would be for products classified as medications. Manufacturers can make claims based on studies that they themselves perform. The FDA will pull a skin care system off the market only if it claims to be a drug or poses health risks.

Considerations

It is important to consider whether to use an anti-aging skin care system that is over-the-counter or prescription. Prescription systems have higher doses of active ingredients and are more likely to be effective. Another consideration is cost, but a higher price does not necessarily mean higher quality. Be aware that skin care systems require daily use for weeks before showing results.
