It is important to make a nursery a place both you and your baby enjoy. After all, according to the KidsHealth website, newborn babies spend between 16 and 20 hours sleeping every day--meaning you both could be spending a lot of time in her room. Fortunately, there are many creative ways to liven up the nursery and make it a comfortable place for both you and your baby.
Hand Chart
Instead of a buying a growth chart to keep record of your baby's height, the HGTV website suggests keeping track of her hand size. Start by painting a boarder around your baby's room. Every month or so, dip your baby's hand in nontoxic paint and place her handprint on the border. Watch how much bigger her hand gets from year to year as the handprints travel around the length of the room.
Color-block Mural
If you can't decide what color to paint the nursery, the Parents website recommends using multiple shades in a color-block mural. Begin by penciling in a level grid on the wall. Section off the squares using tape, being sure to use your nail to seal the edges of the tape so the colors don't blend into each other. Fill in the squares with a variety of colors until you have a wall full of colorful squares. Because of the variety of colors, virtually any bedding, furniture and accessory is likely to match.
Transfers
Use removable wall transfers to decorate your baby's room walls. They are inexpensive and come in a wide variety of patterns and shapes. Unlike paint or permanent borders, wall transfers can be easily changed or removed as your child grows.
Carry-all Buckets
Purchase several colorful carry-all buckets to keep baby toys in. Choose a style that is small enough to fit under your baby's crib for easy storage. Besides keeping your baby's room organized, they are portable, making it easy to grab the entire bucket to take along to the babysitter.
Contemporary Art
Visit a secondhand store or yard sale to find a variety of old children's books. The HGTV website says to carefully cut out pictures and frame them. Not only does this create contemporary art, it can make reading an interactive experience when your baby is old enough to understand the images.
