Facts on Tamoxifen & Leg Pain

According to the National Cancer Institute, tamoxifen works like estrogen in preserving bone strength while lowering the incidence of breast cancer both in previously diagnosed cancer patients and those deemed to be at risk for future cancer cell growth.

History

Tamoxifen has been on the market for over thirty years and has been prescribed for women at risk of developing breast cancer for over ten years.

Function

According to the National Cancer Institute, tamoxifen interferes with estrogen activity, thereby causing menopausal symptoms in some women who take the drug. Leg pain is an established side effect of the drug.

Effects

Tamoxifen may produce aching and stiffness similar to arthritis; this pain may respond well to massage, heat and swimming as well as muscle strengthening exercise.

Time Frame

Because tamoxifen is typically prescribed for a five-year duration, some of the leg pain symptoms may be a result of the normal aging process rather than the medication.

Solution

Physicians typically prescribe NSAIDS for the leg pain associated with tamoxifen. If the patient is non-responsive, opiates may be prescribed instead.
