Counseling programs provide help for addiction, trauma recovery, anger management, family problems, and vocational training throughout the state of Washington. These problems require professional consultation. Most counselors accept insurance, but verify with your therapist your method of payment method prior to a counseling session. Mental health services concerning employment, addiction, pregnancy, or relationships are available through private therapists, or state health organizations, such as Medicare.

EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) utilizes eye movements, sound or pulsations to stimulate the brain. Specialized counseling with EMDR requires working with a registered therapist to address relationships, emotional distress, and negative behavior patterns. The EMDR method is credited to Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. with several practicing therapists in Washington state. The technique is used for a range of counseling from PTSD symptoms to performance enhancement in the workplace.

Non-Violent Communication

This counseling program assists prisoners and their families or loved ones with the re-introduction process by transforming prisoners (or Returnees to their communities) into active peacemakers. Nonviolent programs are in five prisons in Washington state, three prisons at the Monroe Correctional Complex in Monroe, Washington, the Women's Correctional Center Tacoma, and the newest program established at the Stafford Creek Corrections Center in Aberdeen, Washington.

Addiction Counseling

Mental health and substance abuse addictions are closely related. Chemical dependency service providers certified by the Division of Behavioral Health and Recovery (DBHR) can be found on the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services website. Certification information for agencies and professionals is also provided on this website. Addiction counseling centers, such as the Hart Center in Seattle, provide clients with psychotherapy for issues that co-occur with addiction such as phobia, generalized anxiety disorder, bipolar illness, post traumatic stress disorder PTSD, anger management, stress reduction, social anxiety, trauma and phobic avoidance.

Adoption

Family counseling services in Washington have programs to assist with adoption. The Children's Home Society has evolved from a home for troubled youth into a large organization focused on early childhood education, child and family counseling, out-of-home care, adoption, and advocacy. Counseling is based on services for children are throughout King County, Spokane, Tacoma, Vancouver, Walla Walla and Wenatchee.

Employment Counseling

Counseling services for workers with disabilities are provided throughout Washington state in vocational rehabilitation. The Department of Vocational Rehabilitation requires an evaluation with a counselor to determine eligibility. Vocational rehabilitation counselors match workers with a suitable employer or recommend further trainings. The Client Assistant Program (CAP) is designed to protect individuals from discrimination due to a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
