Overview

Women who need help with regulation of their menstrual cycles may ask their doctors or gynecologists to prescribe medroxyprogesterone 10 mg. The medicine mimics the actions of the female hormone progestin, which helps control menstruation and ovulation, Drugs.com reports. Physicians also may prescribe the hormone replacement of medroxyprogesterone 10 mg to help lower endometrial hyperplasia risks in some women. Drugs.com states this drug helps prevent this problem that can cause uterine cancer to occur for women who take hormonal replacement estrogen.

Menstrual Changes

While medroxyprogesterone 10 mg functions to regulate the menstrual cycles, it can temporarily alter menstruation in other ways. The medication can cause the woman to experience altered flow levels during menstruation. It can, for example, cause bleeding between cycles known as breakthrough bleeding. It also can cause the medically termed condition amenorrhea in which the woman misses normal periods. These side effects, classified as non-serious, often go away on their own. Drugs.com recommends questioning the doctor about these problems if they exist in severe form or do not cease.

Skin Problems

The introduction of medroxyprogesterone 10 mg into a woman’s body can cause some temporary, non-serious side effects on the skin and with the hair. The increase in progestin in the body can cause the woman to develop acne, MedlinePlus indicates. It also can cause her to experience hair growth on her face. At the same time, the medication can cause a loss of scalp hair. These side effects, while disconcerting, generally end as the woman’s body grows accustomed to the medication.

Stomach Problems

Using medroxyprogesterone 10 mg can cause the woman to develop an upset stomach, primarily at the start of use, MedlinePlus indicates. This side effect may or may not accompany changes in the woman’s weight. She may lose or gain weight when she first takes medroxyprogesterone 10 mg. Doctors expect these side effects to end without help, but any woman suffering severe forms of them should ask a medical professional.

Insomnia or Drowsiness

Medroxyprogesterone 10 mg can produce either insomnia or drowsiness during the bodily adjustment period to the medication, MedlinePlus indicates. It can make it difficult to sleep and may cause waking following initial sleep. The medicine also can cause initial tiredness even with enough rest.
