Contact with the oils from poison ivy or oak is one of the most common causes of skin rash, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. In order to stop the plant resins from penetrating the skin, it is important to rinse the infected area with water as quickly as possible, and follow up with a mild cleanser. Because of its soothing qualities, doctors frequently recommend an oatmeal wash to ease the rash and blisters that accompany an allergic reaction to the plants.
Step 1
Pulse ¼ cup of oatmeal in a blender until finely chopped.
Step 2
Place one bar of Ivory soap on a paper plate or piece of paper towel, and microwave on high for 2 minutes. Watch carefully and turn off the oven as soon as the soap expands into a fluffy cloud.
Step 3
Add the oatmeal to the Ivory soap and place over medium heat in a large, well-insulated pot. Stir with a wooden spoon until the soap begins to soften and blends with the oatmeal.
Step 4
Remove from heat and allow the mixture to cool until it is warm to the touch. If desired, add a couple of drops of essential oils to the soap and blend well. Although not scientifically proven, the menthol in peppermint, and the essential oils of lavender or chamomile may help calm inflammation and relieve itching, according to the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy.
Step 5
Set the soap mixture on a counter and allow to cool for several minutes. Hand shape or place in a mold and let cool overnight. Use tepid water to form a lather and use as needed.
Tips and Warnings
- Use a brush to wash under the fingernails to avoid transferring the plant oils to other areas of the body. The best way to avoid contact with poison ivy and poison oak is to learn to identify the plants in their natural environment.
