Joint and muscle pain occurs more frequently as we age. Muscle pain can also occur as a result of tension, injury or exercise and usually affects one spot, according to MedlinePlus. Joint pain can occur due to an overuse injury, such as bursitis, or secondary to a disease, such as osteoarthritis. Whatever the cause, joint and muscle pain can make you feel sore and uncomfortable. There are many over-the-counter spray products available that claim to ease joint and muscle pain, but always check with your doctor first before using them.

Biofreeze Pain Relieving Spray

According to Biofreeze, their pain relieving spray is intended for use for the temporary relief of muscle strains and sprains, particularly of the back, neck and shoulders. They also recommend it for joint aches and pains of the ankle, knee, hip and elbow. Biofreeze spray contains the active ingredient menthol, a cooling pain reliever, along with botanical ingredients, including arnica extract, eucalyptus oil, ilex herbal extract, lavender oil, camphor, peppermint oil, water and white tea extract. It is sold in 16-ounce and 2-ounce spray bottles and is for external use only.

Ironman Extra Strength Muscle Spray

Mentholatum Ironman Extra Strength Muscle Spray is a fine, continuous spray that claims to temporarily alleviate joint and muscle pain. According to Ironman Pain Management, their spray has been tested by athletes in the Ironman Triathlon and is helpful in reducing the minor aches and pains due to backaches, arthritis, strains, sprains and bruises. It contains the active ingredients camphor and menthol, listed as topical anesthetics. It also contains inactive ingredients, including horse chestnut seed extract, alcohol, arnica extract and water. It comes in a 3-ounce spray bottle and is intended for external use.

CVS Cold and Hot Sore Muscle Spray

Some retail pharmacy chains, such as CVS, sell their own brand of joint and muscle pain sprays. According to CVS, their Cold and Hot Sore Muscle Spray is intended to relieve the minor pains of arthritis, backache, bruises, muscle cramps, strains and sprains. It contains the active ingredients menthol and methyl salicylate, or oil of wintergreen, a topical analgesic. It contains inactive ingredients including arnica, eucalyptus oil, ilex extract, peppermint oil, water and alcohol. It is sold in a 4-ounce spray bottle and is only for external use.

Hyland's Arnica Spray

Hyland markets a pain-relieving spray called Arnica Spray. According to Hyland's, it contains the plant extract Arnica montana in a 50-percent isopropyl alcohol base. Arnica is a homeopathic remedy used to heal bruises and relieve pain from muscle strains and sprains. This product is for external use only and sold in 1-ounce and 4-ounce spray bottles. It should not be used on broken skin or by those allergic to arnica.

Dr. Frank's Joint and Muscle Pain Relief Oral Spray

Dr. Frank's Joint and Muscle Pain Relief Oral Spray is a homeopathic product meant to be taken orally. This product can be used for the temporary relief of pain associated with arthritis and muscle pain of the back, hips, knees, hands and ribs. It contains ten active homeopathic ingredients, including Bryonia alba, Ledum palustre, Arnica montana, Rhus toxicodendron, Ruta graveolens, Aurum metallicum, Apis mellifica and Rhododendron chrysanthum.
