Ear candles are long, hollow, cone-shaped and made out of beeswax or paraffin. The main purpose of ear candling is to alleviate sinus, ear aches, headaches and blocked ears. Over the past several years, ear candles have gained popularity as an alternative remedy for conventional treatments. Once you get ear candles, there are several steps involved.
Step 1
Gather the things you'll need. In order to prepare yourself for the procedure, find an assistant, a pair of scissors, a paper plate, a pack of matches and a bowl. This is all in addition to your candles. Fill the bowl with water.
Step 2
Come onto the floor in a comfortable position on your side with your head on a pillow and your ear right at shoulder height so it is level.
Step 3
Get the candle ready. Cut an "X" in the center of the paper plate. Poke the narrow end of the candle through so it hangs down slightly and is snug in the plate. Have your assistant estimate the width of your ear canal and have him trim the tapered end of the candle to match this diameter.
Step 4
Light the candle and prime it. Have your assistant light the top of the candle and place his finger on the bottom for a few seconds. Once smoke starts coming out of the bottom, it is ready.
Step 5
Begin the process. Have your assistant gently insert the candle into your ear. If smoke is seen at the bottom, then the seal is not good enough. The smoke should be going into the air and not escaping. Have your assistant twist and move the candle around until there is no smoke coming out of the bottom.
Step 6
Have your assistant remove the residue. As the candle is burning down, black residue will develop. Have your assistant cut this residue off with the scissors and place it in the bowl of water. Have him cut it in between the burning part and the top.
Step 7
Remove the candle. Once the candle is about 3 inches away from the plate, have your assistant remove the plate, gently take out the candle and place it in the water to extinguish it. Do one more candle for that ear and then follow the same steps and do two candles for the other ear as well.
