Gymnastics is one of the most fascinating sports to watch, especially for young kids. They see their idols at the Olympics and other competitions perform with seemingly zero effort. Balance beam routines are one of the most exciting, yet complicated events to execute. While it is best to receive coaching in a professional setting, those who are motivated can perfect their gymnastics beam skills.

Step 1

Obtain resources to help you learn how to master the gymnastics beam. These can be found in bookstores, online retailers and how-to websites. You may also want to take some classes in a professional setting first so you can learn how to go about your daily practice.

Step 2

Build a balance beam for at home use. Learning gymnastics beam routines may take extra time outside of the gym.

Step 3

Warm up your muscles before practicing balance beam skills. Stretch all of your major muscle groups with arm circles, toe touches, lunges and bridges for at least 10 minutes. This will help you prevent muscle tears and joint pain.

Step 4

Visualize every skill in your mind's eye before physically attempting it. Think about each movement and how you will execute the move.

Step 5

Use a spotter, especially if you are a beginner. The balance beam provides an extremely narrow range to work with. A spotter should be well trained in assisting gymnasts so that you do not hurt yourself.

Tips and Warnings

  • Have someone tape you when you practice on the balance beam. This will help you see where you need to focus on your strengths and weaknesses.
  • Never practice alone. Always have someone nearby in case you get hurt or need help.
