Every player on the basketball court needs to know how to handle the ball with skill. While the point guard must have expert ball-handling skills, every player must be able to move with the ball in at least a rudimentary manner. The ability to dribble the ball well can create space for shooting or passing and will help a team function offensively.
Cone Drill
Set up five cones just past midcourt and space them out every 5 feet. Dribble to the right of the first cone, the left of the second, the right of the third and continue on in that manner. Follow the same pattern as you return to the starting point. When you reach midcourt, pass the ball to your waiting teammate who will do the same drill. Do this twice before moving on to the next drill.
Two-Ball Drill
Start off at the baseline with a basketball in each hand. Dribble the ball in your dominant hand up to the near free throw line. When you reach that point, start dribbling the second ball as well. As you dribble the ball in your dominant hand, start dribbling the other ball as soon as you hear the first ball hit the floor. Walk and dribble until you get to midcourt. Pick up the pace by trotting all the way to the far baseline. Follow the same pattern as you return to the starting point.
Dribble and Pass
This drill encourages players to keep their heads up while dribbling and find the open teammates. Set up four cones in the offensive zone. The first will be to the right of the free throw lane and the second will be at the right baseline. The other two will be on the left side of the court at the same spots. The player must dribble with his right hand as he dribbles down the right side of the court and then quickly pass as he gets to the cone at the right side of the free throw lane to a waiting teammate. He then must do the same at the right baseline. Follow that by dribbling to the left side of the free throw lane with your left hand and passing and then to the left baseline. This encourages players to dribble the ball while looking at the rest of the court and not the ball.
